Cisco's Splunk adds Tokenomics to track coding-agent token spend

At Splunk .conf on Sept. 15, Cisco added a Tokenomics module to Splunk Agent Observability. It attributes token spend across AI agents and across employees' use of coding agents, naming Claude Code, Codex and Cursor.

Why it matters

Token spend is moving out of the billing export and into the observability stack. Putting per-employee coding-agent usage in the same product that evaluates agent behaviour turns 'who burned this?' into a query instead of a month-end investigation.

Attribution is the easy half. The claim worth testing is the forecast: Cisco says its Deep Time Series Model will project where consumption is heading before the billing period closes. A leaderboard ranks yesterday's spenders; a forecast gives finance time to intervene.

Source takeaway

This is a vendor press release, so there is no pricing, forecast accuracy or customer data. Agent Observability is now in Splunk Observability Cloud and Cisco Cloud Control; the release gives no ship date for Tokenomics.

Anthropic’s June 2026 Economic Index ties Claude use to real-world rhythms: 93% of chats yield an artifact, marketing-manager sessions burn ~2.5x the tokens of editors, and app-building runs over 3x the median conversation.
